9/20/09: How to Face the Future, Pastor John C. Martin, Victorville Assembly of God
"Don't make God small. Don't confine God in your life. God is a great big God. And, unfortunately, we want to wrap our hands around this thing, to understand it. But, in doing so, you minimize God. That's not that he is minimized, but you, we, we tend to minimize him. We tend to want to put him in a box, because we want things to be a certain kind of way. God blows the walls out of boxes. He can't be contained. Don't make God too small. Let God continue to enlarge in your life, because God's got great things in store. Do you believe that today? Do you really believe that today? Planning without God is an incredible mistake..."

7/26/09: How to Win Over Temptation, Pastor John C. Martin of Victorville First Assembly of God
I want to look at what God has to say to us about man’s oldest problem in the world, temptation. It goes all of the way back literally to Adam, and we all eventually face it. Sometimes even when we know what’s right to do, we struggle in this issue of temptation. It’s difficult to say no…it’s difficult. Oscar Wilde once said, “I can withstand anything except temptation. The only way to get rid of temptation is to give in to it.” Well, that’s one answer…that’s not necessarily what God would say to us, but that’s one answer. The Bible talks about two different kinds of testing that takes place in our lives. One is called trials, and we looked at the trial side of it last week. And the other is called temptation. Both of them use the same Greek word that’s found there in the book of James, “horasmus”.
And as we understand trails, as we understand temptations, there are some similarities, and yet there are obviously some differences that take place as well. James chapter 1, verses 12-18, let me read the verses for us today out of the New Living translation.
12 God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13 And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
16 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. 18 He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.
So how do we win over temptation when it comes our way. Number 1: We need to be realistic, be realistic. Face the fact. You and I, we will be tempted. Christians are tempted. All of us are tempted. The text does not say to you and me today, “If we’re tempted, do this or that”. It says “When we face temptation”…

It was 233 years ago, on July 4th, 1776, there was signed in the city of Philadelphia the Declaration of Independence. It marked the birth of a nation, which under God, was destined for world leadership. We often forget in declaring independence from an earthly power that our forefathers made a forthright declaration of dependence upon Almighty God. The closing words of this document solemnly declare, “With a firm reliance upon protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”
The 56 courageous men who signed that document understood that this was not just high sounding rhetoric. They knew that if they had succeeded, the best that they could expect would be years of hardship in a struggling new nation. And if they lost, they would face a hangman’s noose as traitors. Out of the 56, few were long to survive. Five, were captured by British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes from Rhode Island to Charleston sacked, looted, occupied by the enemy, or burned. Two lost their sons in the army. One had two sons captured, 9 of the 56 died in the war from its hardships or from its bullets.
Whatever the ideas of the men you have that met that hot summer in Philadelphia, it is important that we remember certain facts about the men who pledged their lives. They were not poor men, or wild eyed pirates. They were men of means, rich men, who enjoyed much luxury and ease in their personal lives. Not hungry men.

6/28/09: When You Experience God, by Dr. John C. Martin, Pastor of Victorville First Assembly of God.
"The wow factor, when you truly experience God…
He is the first and the last. He is the beginning, and the end. He is the keeper of creation, and the creator of all. He is the architect of the universe, and a manager of all times. He always is and he always will be. Unmoved, unchanged, undefeated, and never undone. He was bruised, and brought healing. He was pierced, and eased pain. He was persecuted and brought freedom. He was dead and brought to life. He is risen, and brings power. He reigns and brings peace. The world can’t understand him. The armies can’t defeat him. The schools can’t explain him and the leaders can’t ignore him. Herod couldn’t kill him. The Pharisees couldn’t confuse him, the people couldn’t hold him. Nero couldn’t crush him. Hitler couldn’t silence him. The new age can’t replace him and Donahue can’t explain him away. He is light, love, longevity and Lord. He is goodness, kindness, gentleness and God. He is holy, righteous, mighty, powerful and pure. His ways are always right. His word is always eternal. His will is always unchanging. His mind is always on me. He is my redeemer, he is my savior, he is my guide, he is my peace. He is my joy, he is my comfort. He is my Lord, he rules my life. I serve him because his bond is love. His burden is light. His goal for me is abundant life. I follow him because he is the wisdom of the wise, the power of the powerful, the ancient of days, the ruler of rulers, the leader of leaders, the overseer of the overcomers, the sovereign Lord of all that was and is and is to come.
If that seems impressive to you, try this on for size: His goal is a relationship with you and me. He will never leave me, he will never forsake me, never mislead me, never forget me, never overlook me, never cancel my appointment in his appointment book. When I fall, he lifts me up. When I fail, he forgives. When I am weak, he is strong. When I’m lost, he is the way. When I’m afraid, he’s my courage. When I stumble, he steadies me. When I am hurt, he heals me. When I am broken, he mends me. When I am blind, he leads me. When I am hungry, he feeds me. When I have trials, he is with me. When I face persecution, he shields me. When I face problems, he comforts me. When I face loss, he provides for me. When I face death, he carries me home. He is everything for everybody, everywhere, every time, every way. He is God. He is faithful. I am his, and he is mine. My father in heaven can whip the father of this world. So if you’re wondering why I feel so secure, understand this, he said it and that settles it. God is in control, and I am on his side. That means all is well with my soul. Every day is a blessed day, for I have experience with Jesus Christ. That’s what it’s about, friends, that’s what it’s about. We can be amazed at God’s greatness."
6/21/09: Father's Day Message: What Kids Need From Their Fathers, by Dr. John C. Martin, Pastor of Victorville First Assembly of God.
"No matter where your kids are, or where your grandchildren are, please take it seriously and pray for them. Pray for them. Pray God's hand of protection and strength and spiritual blessings upon their lives. Become proactive in doing so. What is it that you want to see in their lives? Don't look at what is, look at what can be. Keep the end in mind, and start praying, 'God, bring about your will, your purposes in a powerful way in their lives.' God will honor the prayers of a righteous person...
