Total Wellness: Improve Your Health by Understanding and Cooperating With Your Body's Natural Healing Systems, by Joseph Pizzorno, ND (1997).

Pg 7: "In 1994, we spent $1 trillion on health care in the U.S., or, more accurately, we spent this astounding sum on disease treatment...."

Pg. 4: "All agree that the concept of prevention makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, the medical profession has warped the concept of prevention to include diagnosis and treatment of disease..."

Pg. 2: "After 25 years of research, seeing thousands of patients, and teaching over a thousand naturopathic students, I have come to recognize that, although thousands of diseases have been named, relatively few causes or imbalances underlie most health problems...I present, in layperson's terms, a comprehensive, but understandable, discussion of the key underlying systems of the body, which must work effectively for each of use to establish and maintain total wellness.

Pg. 4 & 5: "Functional Medicine...The field of health care which employs assessment and early intervention to improve physiological, emotion/cognitive and physical function...In Functional Medicine, the presence or absence of a disease is of secondary consideration to an understanding of the function or dysfunction which prevents or allows a disease to occur...Functional medicine does not focus on the isolated entity called disease, but rather on the specifics of structural and functional mechanisms which comprise the whole person at any particular point in his or her life..."

The Solutions to Our Country's Current Healthcare Needs:
Naturopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine
Real Changes Needed in Healthcare Policy

Chapter 1: Introduction:

Each of us is our own best doctor.

This book is for those who are tired of the old clichés of "eat right," "exercise more," and "reduce your stress." It is for those who want to understand their own unique needs for optimizing health, where they are weak, and how to strengthen themselves.

This book teaches you how to take a laser-gun approach to your health concerns rather than the shotgun approach recommended to everyone. For example, although we are all concerned about cholesterol and are advised to decrease cholesterol intake by dietary restriction, only about 10% of us can actually decrease our serum cholesterol levels by lowering dietary cholesterol. Likewise, for hypertension, while all are recommended to decrease salt intake, salt is only an important contributing factor for about 10% of us. Some people can smoke from an early age with seeming impunity (thus the now banned ads we used to see in magazines and on television of the octogenarians claiming they've smoked since their teens without a problem), while others succumb to lung cancer within a few years.

It's all very frustrating for a health-conscious person to understand what he or she really needs, thus we chase one health fad after another, always disappointed because we really don't feel all that much better. The basic problem is we are all so different, or as Roger Williams, Ph.D. (the noted nutrition researcher who discovered the vitamin pantothenic acid) first observer in the 1960's, we each have a unique "biochemical individuality". Basically, fads and generic information fail because they aren't really for us as individuals-they are for "everyone" and thus are optimal for practically no one. Each of us is as unique biochemically as our fingerprints are unique physically.

Chapter 2: The Crisis in Health Care:

We can't afford to only treat disease, we must learn how to stay well.

In 1994, we spent $1 trillion on health care in the U.S., or, more accurately, we spent most of this astounding sum on disease treatment. This represents an increase of 300% in the last 15 years.¹ Health care costs now consume 15% of the gross national product (GNP), with the percentage of GNP spent on health care continuing to increase at twice the rate of inflation (see Figure 2-1). If the rate of increase continues, health care costs will consume the entire GNP within 50 years!

Percentage of GNP for Healthcare: 1930: 2%, 1940: 4%, 1950: 4.5%, 1960: 5.8%, 1970: 7.7%, 1980: 9.2%, 1990: 12%, 2000: 16%

Corporations now spend an incredible 47% of their after-tax profits on health care, and it is projected that by the year 2000, health care costs will equal 69% of after-tax profit at the average Fortune 500 company. Even now in the U.S., we spend 40% more per person on health care than the next closest country, Japan. The difference in cost between an American car and a Japanese car of comparable quality is asserted by some economists to be due entirely to the higher costs to industry of health care for American workers.

Why Health Care Costs Have Increased

Why have health care costs escalated so dramatically? As might be expected, there are many opinions. While I believe the real underlying cause is that we have a disease-treatment rather than a health-promotion system, much can be learned by looking at problems with our current system. As discussed in detail [in Chapter 2], we use doctors too much (especially specialists), use too many expensive hospital-based procedures, use too many expensive drugs, use many expensive medical procedures inappropriately, experience a lot of side effects from drugs and medical procedures, and spend too much money subsidizing medical education and administrative inefficiency..."

Chapter 3: A Systems Approach to Total Wellness:

Our bodies have a tremendous ability to heal, if just given the chance.

In conventional medicine, the primary function of the physician is diagnosis, i.e., identifying which disease a person is suffering from. This disease-diagnosis orientation leads to the disease-treatment, symptom-relief system that dominates health care in our country. As discussed in Chapter Two, this system is failing. We need a different kind of health care thinking and a different kind of physician. If we want to be healthy, it's up to us. We must become more aware of our bodies, learn how they function, understand what makes us healthy or sick - in short, become our own best physician.

Being Our Own Best Physician

Daunted by the prospect of self-diagnosis? Indeed, it is an almost impossible task to determine which one of several thousands of different diseases you may be suffering from. Physicians with thousands of hours of sophisticated medical training and years of practice frequently make inaccurate diagnoses where specific diseases are concerned. However, I believe the name of the disease is not what we need to know to get well. The necessary diagnosis is actually much simpler. In fact, our cultural obsession with complex diseases not only blinds us to the real causes of illness but disempowers us and gives over control of our health to doctors in a system that often relieves only symptoms. It's as if we spent all our time and resources hiring highly skilled specialists to repair a crack in the ceiling with spackle and paint when the root of the problem is a structural weakness in the building's foundation.

Appendix A: Health Log

Keep track of How Your Behaviors and Health Are Improving

I strongly recommend you track how your behaviors and health are improving. Keep a daily diary of what you are doing and experiencing using a format that is convenient for you. Then, once a week, score yourself using the chart [see text] to summarize your inappropriate behaviors, symptoms, and diseases. Add it all up and see how you've changed. I think you'll be pleased to see how much your health improves once you understand where to put your best energy.

Appendix B: Which Chapters to Study

The tables below can quickly help you identify the chapter you should study first. They list the behaviors that tend to cause one of your healing systems to go out of balance, the symptoms that commonly occur when a system is out of balance, and the diseases associated with or caused by imbalances in these systems. Look through the tables, determine which of your systems seem most out of balance, and then use the advice in the appropriate chapter to help move you along the path of Total Wellness.

Glossary
Key Terms:

Allopathy:
The conventional method of medicine which combats a disease by using substances and techniques specifically against
that disease.

Naturopathic Medicine: Family physicians who help people understand why they get sick and how to become healthy. Naturopaths emphasize the promotion of health rather than the simple treatment of symptons and disease.
